GLK Kite Camp and Lessons

 

Great Lakes Kiteboarding School is one of the longest running schools in Michigan and is regarded as one of the best Kiteboarding schools in the US. Our kite camps are now in their 6th season. We have designed the ultimate teaching program to make you a safe, confident and self sufficient kiteboarder. GLK has 13 years combined teaching with just two of our professional instructors, no other kiteboarding school in Michigan can come close to the experience of GLK. We also use the latest 2008 Slingshot and Liquid Force kites and boards.

At GLK we believe in a more personalized service. Our camps limit up to 8 students with 4 professional instructors. It's as close as you can get to a one on one lesson. We teach you responsible kiting because we regard the highest standard for safety in this sport. Respecting the kite and what it is capable of is far more important.

If you decide to take a camp or private lesson from GLK we recommend purchasing a trainer kite. Having the trainer kite handling under your belt before a camp or lesson will speed up the progression of your training. Normally we will spend up to 2-2.5 hours training on a trainer kite before going to the next step. We offer the Slingshot B-2 Trainer Kite for $119. The kite comes complete with bar, lines and an instructional DVD.

Whatever you’re looking to accomplish GLK can get you there from throwing your first jump to back rolls, front rolls, S-bends, grabs, board offs, kite loops, surface handle passes and others. GLK has the experience and knowledge to get you at the level you want to be.

In addition to our Tawas location, GLK will now be offering 2 day camps on Lake St. Clair this season! Lake St. Clair is one of the biggest and shallowest bodies of water in Michigan and is perfect for learning and riding. We have designed the ultimate lesson program over the last 7 years that will guarantee you will be a safe, confident and self sufficient kiteboarder.

Kiteboarding in Michigan

Lesson Program:

 Saturday:

1. Ground Training
Understanding the wind window, beach etiquette, safty issues, trainer kite, kite setup, line management, attachment tips, launching and landing. You will be able to self-launch and land the kite with confidence.

2. Water Training
Relaunching from the water, body drags, getting up on a board, basic riding and self-rescue.

3. Double up time
Self-launching from the beach, self-landing, more riding. Learning how to edge, ride both directions, stance, riding over powered and changing directions.

Sunday:

Reinforce first day's lesson, ride with comfort as your instructor follows behind on a wave runner.

Kites have tons of power! Professionals can reach heights up to 40 feet off flat water. That same power can turn against you big time. It only takes a moment's lapse in concentration to turn a great day into bad one. Remember, a kite will do only what you tell it to do. That's why kite control is so important.

When I started in 1999 there were no instructors or instructions in the first Wipica kite that was sent out. I don't want anyone to go through what I experienced those first few years. We want everyone to enjoy a positive yet well educated kiteboarding experience. You can have fun and learn in a safe nurturing environment.
