Great Lakes Kiteboarding Hatteras Trip 2013
Â
GLK Annual Hatteras Trip April 6th-13th
Â
We will be booking spots for our annual Hatteras trip. This is a trip for anyone who kites and wants to spend 7 days in flat shallow water, ride head high waves and log many miles of downwinders. Or for anyone who is looking to get into kiting and wants to learn from the longest running school in the best spot for kiteboaring in the US. Hatteras is the place!
Â
Last year we had 7 days of sunny 70 degree weather and 20-25 mph winds. Some of us would start our day surfing with SUP's till the wind picked up then we would do many downwinders in ocean waves or ride slicks on the sound. We would end our day in the hotub with a cold beer and then cook up a great meal with the group.
Â
The GLK Hatteras trip gets better and better every year mainly because of the diverse group of people who all have one incredible addiction...Kiteboarding!!!
Â
GLK will be offering the following lesson for that week
3 Day Camp. Price $699. Learn from the longest running school in Michigan. Over the last 10 years we have developed a lesson program that will make you a safe, self sufficient and confident kiteboarder. This camp is designed for the total beginner from trainer kite time, rigging and tuning an inflatable, all the safety releases, self launching, self rescuing and self launching. Then we get into the water for some body dragging with your instructor dragging behind you the whole time. From there we will go through the basics of getting up and riding, edging and proper stance. After you learn the basics you will be doing many downwinders with your instructor riding with you the whole way down. By the end of our 3 day camp you will be up and riding and feeling totally confident.
The best part of learning with GLK in Hatteras is that you will be staying with Kiteboarders for 7 days who all have the same passion for this incredible sport!!
2 Day Camp. Price $499. This camp is designed for the beginner kiteboarder who is having difficulties with riding, kite handling, board skills, self launching, self rescuing and self landing. We will cater to your needs with this Camp!! Don't forget in this class we will also be doing many downwinders in which the instructor can pinpoint what you need to work on and also show you first hand.
Private Day Lesson. Price $299 (beginner-intermediate). So you want to learn to transition? Kiteloop? Backroll? Ride waves? You tell us what you want to accomplish and we will get you there guaranteed
Hourly. Price $75hr. (beginner-intermediate-advance). If you're having trouble with any part of your riding or tricks let us break it down and get you there!!
GLK will supply all the gear needed for the Camps. If you have your own gear then we highly recommend bringing it with you!
Price for lodging for the week will be $300- $350 per person. When everyone has signed up we will then arrange the driving arrangements for the trip. Most people end up carpooling with others to off set the price of gas. I am open to suggestions on renting a full size van or camper for the week. We always talk about that every year, so if anyone is interested let me know.
The weather and winds that time of month can vary to 80 degrees and 15mph to 50 degrees and 40mph. So with that in mind you will need to bring the following things:
1. Every kite and board you own. (7m-14m) 2. Full steamer wetsuit and shorty (5/3mm-2mm) 3. Booties and mitts. 4. Warm and cold weather clothes ( jackets, hats, gloves, shorts and t's ) 5. Sunscreen 6. Towels 7. Sheets and pillow cases. 8. Food (optional). Each house can decide if they want to annie up and buy food together. There are plenty of grocery stores there. 9. A great attitude...remember this trip is all about fun and riding!!!
If you have any questions feel free to contact me via email or @ 586 822 6511
Looking forward to another epic trip to the Outer Banks!!

Great Lakes Kiteboarding Hatteras Trip 2010!
Hello fellow Kiteboarders,
So the snow was good for about a week to ride and now I am watching it melting away as our temps start warming up. I am hoping for another big snow fall and much cooler temps...unfortunately we live in Michigan so who knows what we may get. If we do get some snow I will be contacting those who have signed up for snowkiting lessons.
Now let's think about warm weather Kiteboarding!! GLK will be doing our annual Kiteboarding trip down to the Outer Banks of Hatteras North Carolina April 3rd-10th. Last year we had a record 33 people that came down plus the GLK instructors. We rented 3 houses and had of course an absolute blast! GLK had houses on the sound and ocean side right across from each other. Our group logged many miles of epic downwinders on the ocean side and sound side. Our ocean side downwinders were pretty sick because we would ride right to our house, grab and beer and jump right into the hot tub....then we would do it again ;-)!!! The GLK Hatteras trip gets better and better every year mainly because of the diverse group of people who all have one incredible addiction...Kiteboarding!!!
Â

GLK will be offering the following lesson for that week. (Lessons need to be booked by March 1st).

What is there to say about the GLK Puerto Rico trip? Well..I could mention the fact that we had sun and blue skies 8 out of 8 days. Or the fact that we ate some of the best Puerto Rican food ,just steps from our hotel, for pennies on the dollar compared to other places in the carribean.
|
|
|
Or I could tell you about how the owner of the restaurant was one of the most gracious hosts we have ever come across, letting us stay past store hours to enjoy each other's company with a few cervezas. Oh, and we wouldn't want to leave out the fact that we had 8 straight days of riding mostly on 9 and 12 meter kites!! But what we really want to tell you about is how 23 people came along on a trip to the Caribbean and had one hell of a time. The demographics could not be more varied. We had doctors, lawyers, car salesman, and college students. Ages ranged from 20 to 65 years of age, but it didn't matter. Everyone got along great and learned a lot from each other, whether it was learning to do a back roll from one of our instructors, or learning how to speak Spanish from one of the students who, by the way, was actually learning how to kite himself! Here is a little breakdown of a typical day with the GLK crew in Puerto Rico: We would wake up and walk right down the street to some hot breakfast and fantastic coffee at El Manglaar (The Mangrove). After breakfast we would head to the dock, right at our hotel, and load up the boat with gear to head to the mangroves. If you dont know what "the mangroves" are, it is a group of tropical trees rooted to the coral reef out about a mile into the atlantic. It is shallow all around the mangroves and perfect for setting up a tent for shade.
What's nice about the mangroves is that it can be blowing 20 knots above your head but perfectly calm down at the water level! Pumping up the kites at the mangroves was a breeze. Our host, Luijo, would bring scuba tanks and pump up about 20 kites in 20 minutes! Luijo would also bring us delicious lunches everyday to refuel when we were tired from kiting all morning. After lunch we would launch again and it's off for another few hours of good kiting with friends. Can't beat that.
Â
Once we all took showers and got cleaned up, we would head back to the manglaar for some mofongo and medellas. Some would retire early but most would stay up and enjoy the night and each other's company over a few beers (which, I might add, were only buck a piece). Then off to do it again the next day! Not a bad week, not a bad week at all. So if you want to come and enjoy a week in the sun and wind, either to learn how to kite, or to perfect that 40ft air, come do it with Great Lakes Kiteboarding. "We love what we do and we have a great time doing it"

2009 GLK Puerto Rico Trip January 17th-24th Great Lakes Kiteboarding is now in our 7th season of Kiteboarding camps and has designed the ultimate Kiteboarding program which will make you a safe, self sufficient and confident kiteboarder. For 2009 GLK is teaming up for the second time with Luis Jose Mendoza a local Puerto Rican who owns Caribbean Extreme Kiteboarding School. We are putting together the ultimate Puerto Rico Kiteboarding camp in one of the best kiteboarding spots around! With average temps around 85-90 degrees and water temps in the 80's you will see why this place is designed for Kiteboarding. Our riding spot is tucked away in the many Mangrove Islands in La Parguera. You will be learning in butter flat, warm crystal clear shallow water. We will depart right from the Hotel docks in the morning after breakfast, load up the boat with all the gear and venture out to these exotic riding spot just minutes from the hotel. This is the ultimate place to learn and or improve your riding. La Parguera is a small community located on the southwest coast of the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico. Its people, have protected the area from development projects in an effort to maintain its natural beauty. Its coast is mainly covered with mangrove vegetation with hidden inlets that form a natural maze. Just a few hundred feet from the shore are more than 30 mangrove islands that adorn the coastline. These mangrove islands form a natural channel between the shoreline and the open sea. One of these islands serves as an international center for oceanographic studies, which gives testimony of the invaluable marine life richness of the area. La Parguera offers many activities including boat trips through the channels, fishing, kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and Kiteboarding.
Â
We will be staying at POSADA PORLAMAR in La Parguera. This is one of the best hotels in the area and they worked out an incredible rate for our Kiteboarding group!

We will be offering 3 different kiteboarding adventures:

The wind in Hatteras can blow anywhere from 10-50 mph. The average wind speed for April is usually around 15 knots.
Â
What to bring
Bring every kite and board you have. GLK will supply all the gear for the camps and lessons. We will have a few demo kites and boards for experienced riders to try out while we are down there. Wetsuits and booties are a must! Bring a steamer along with a shorty and rash guard. Also bring plenty of warm clothes: winter jackets, gloves, beanies, and clothes for warm weather: shorts, t's and plenty of sunscreen.
